Founded in 1984, a group of friends and concerned people, “The Townspeople,” came together to provide help, comfort and support to the growing number of people succumbing to the disease to be called AIDS. As the numbers grew, so did Townspeople’s commitment to raise funds for needed programs and services throughout San Diego County. In 1994, when the organization formally incorporated, Townspeople began focusing on the greatest need at the time (which still exists today): housing.

Townspeople opened San Diego’s first permanent housing apartments for people living with HIV/AIDS in 1994 and has continued to acquire housing and provide other housing options because of our commitment to people living with HIV/AIDS and our strong belief that housing is healthcare.

Over the years we have provided housing, support, information and referrals for issues related to housing, food, case management, government benefits and social supports to tens of thousands each year. We continue to be a leader in providing direct services for people living with HIV/AIDS including rental and utility assistance in San Diego County.

More than 33 years later, Townspeople is still committed to serve those living with HIV/AIDS and special needs. Townspeople has expanded to ensure those most vulnerable, the homeless and those with special needs have access to safe, affordable housing linked to on-going supportive services; which are directed towards achieving self-sufficiency, residential stability and quality of life.

Townspeople owns and operates three apartment complexes, with a total of 66 affordable apartments. We manage other supportive housing of approx. 20 apartments and provide eligible residents with short-term rental assistance as well. We are in the process of building our 4th complex called Vista del Puente which is expected to be completed in late 2018.

Townspeople is governed by a volunteer board of directors made up of community leaders, residents and people living with HIV/AIDS. We are a nonprofit corporation registered as tax-exempt under under IRS Code 501(c)(3).
